1. Brief Introduction to Wood Floor Types 1. What are solid wood floors, laminate floors, and engineered wood floors? Wood floors refer to floors made of wood, which can be divided into solid wood floors, laminate floors, and engineered wood floors based on material. Solid wood flooring is made of single wood boards, so it has natural texture, good foot feel, and other inherent properties of wood such as regulating indoor temperature and humidity, giving people an elegant and warm feeling; multi-layer solid wood flooring is made by cutting single wood boards into thinner veneers, rearranging them in a crisscross pattern, and then covering them with wood veneer. The purpose of doing this is to change the inevitable tendency of single solid wood to deform easily, preserving its appearance while enhancing the product's stability, making it both attractive and functional. Engineered flooring is made from high-density fiberboard with decorative paper and wear-resistant paper, processed through high temperature and high pressure. Its colors and styles surpass natural limitations, offering variety and richness while being durable, stain-resistant, easy to care for, and affordable. 2. Why choose wooden flooring? Compared to other flooring materials, wooden flooring has the following advantages: 1. Warm in winter and cool in summer: Due to the low thermal conductivity of wood, it has a good temperature-regulating effect as a flooring material, especially in cold winters. People indoors won't feel cold feet like stepping on tiles that feel icy. 2. Beautiful Nature: Wood is natural, and its annual ring texture often gives a feeling of returning to nature and simplicity. Its texture and beauty are unique and unmatched by artificial materials. 3. Durability: The shock absorption and rot resistance of wood are not inferior to other building materials. Many previous wooden boats soaked in water for a long time are still sturdy today, as are wooden floors. 4. Environmental-Friendly: It is made from raw wood, and the material itself has no pollution sources, so it is harmless to the human body. Moreover, wood is the only building material that can grow from nature, making its environmental friendliness incomparable to other building materials. As long as it's a product manufactured by a legitimate manufacturer, there's basically no need to worry about its environmental performance. However, it is also necessary to be cautious of some unscrupulous manufacturers who use inferior materials, paints, glues, etc., which can cause the floor's formaldehyde emission to exceed standards. 5. Not prone to condensation: Since wood has stronger moisture absorption and regulation properties than metal, stone, and concrete, when the weather is humid or the temperature drops, there won't be a phenomenon like water beads forming on the surface. In this way, when wood is used for flooring, it won't become slippery due to moisture, preventing slips and falls, especially for elderly and children. 6. Good foot feel: The impact between wood and the human body is softer and more natural than other building materials, with good elasticity. Walking on it feels very soft and comfortable in terms of temperature, touch, and foot feel, which also helps protect the elderly and children. 2. Choice of Three Types of Wooden Flooring 1. Performance Comparison 1) Appearance: Solid wood and solid wood composite flooring are more natural. The surface of both solid wood and solid wood composite flooring is pure solid wood, directly processed from wood, maintaining the inherent texture and color of the wood, giving a soft and natural feel that is suitable for home use. The appearance of laminate flooring depends on the decorative paper, which uses computer simulation to create different patterns and colors to achieve a realistic effect. Although the decorative layer can realistically simulate effects like wood grain and texture, it still differs from natural wood grain. 2) Foot feel comfort: Solid wood flooring feels great. Solid wood flooring is directly processed from wood, has good elasticity, and feels gentle underfoot. Its comfort performance is excellent, especially suitable for installation in bedrooms and other environments. Solid wood composite flooring is made from multiple layers of veneer bonded together, with a surface touch that closely resembles real wood and also provides a great feel underfoot. The core layer of laminate flooring is mostly high-density fiberboard, which is relatively stiff and has a slightly poor feel and comfort. 3) Stability: Multi-layer solid wood flooring is stable. Engineered flooring disrupts the original wood structure, destroying the anisotropy and moisture expansion and contraction properties of wood. It is dimensionally stable and not easily affected by conditions like humidity and dryness, making it generally suitable for underfloor heating environments. Solid wood composite flooring uses fibers from each layer of boards crisscrossing each other to offset the internal stress of the wood, making the flooring less prone to deformation and cracking. This greatly improves the stability of the flooring, which is only about one-twentieth that of similar solid wood flooring. Solid wood flooring is greatly affected by the dry and wet expansion rate of the wood and the climate, with slightly poor stability performance. If not properly maintained, there are risks of warping and cracking. 4) Environmental-Friendly performance: The formaldehyde content of solid wood flooring is relatively low. During the production process of wooden flooring, adhesives are used, and formaldehyde is one of the main components that determine the bonding strength. Therefore, there may be some free formaldehyde in wooden flooring. Although wood itself may contain trace amounts of formaldehyde, its content is so low that it can be basically ignored, making solid wood flooring low in formaldehyde. During the manufacturing process of solid wood composite flooring and laminate flooring, some formaldehyde may be left behind. However, as long as formaldehyde is controlled within a certain range, it will not pose a threat to the human body. 5) Floor maintenance: Laminate flooring is easy to maintain. The Abrasion Resistant layer of laminate flooring improves the scratch resistance of the floor surface. It has good Abrasion Resistant performance and does not require deliberate maintenance in daily use. Additionally, it has high hardness and good impact resistance. Solid wood flooring, on the other hand, is slightly more delicate and requires regular maintenance such as waxing and oiling. It requires effort to care for during use. Solid wood composite flooring is somewhere between the two; its wear resistance is slightly inferior to that of laminate flooring but more stable than solid wood flooring and easier to maintain. Of course, even good wooden flooring cannot withstand careless "waste." Daily use should also be careful to avoid exposure to sunlight, moisture, and scratches to enhance the lifespan and performance of the flooring. 2. Cost-effectiveness 1) Price difference: Cost-effectiveness vs comfort level There are countless flooring options on the market, and we often feel overwhelmed by the price of flooring. Wooden flooring varies greatly in price due to its material, craftsmanship, and brand. Generally speaking, the price of solid wood flooring is high, while that of solid wood composite flooring is slightly lower, and that of laminate flooring is more affordable.
